February was a fabulous month, filled with vibrant cultural celebrations and activities. Our centre came together to celebrate two significant events: Waitangi Day and Chinese New Year. Our tamariki had the wonderful opportunity to explore and engage in various activities, reflecting on the partnership between Māori and Pākehā and celebrating the rich cultural heritage of Aotearoa (New Zealand).

Our Waitangi Day celebrations focused on supporting the children's developing familiarity with the language, songs, and symbols of Māori culture. Through arts and crafts, they created beautiful pieces of artwork inspired by traditional patterns and symbols. Tamariki also took part in performances, showcasing their skills in poi dance (Māori performing arts) and waiata (songs), fostering a sense of unity and appreciation for te reo Māori and Māori traditions.

To honour the Treaty of Waitangi, our tamariki created their own treaty rules and signed them with their handprints, helping them understand the importance of agreements and respect. They also coloured the Māori flag, deepening their connection to Aotearoa’s heritage.

The festivities continued with the celebration of Chinese New Year. Our tamariki participated in various activities that connected them to the rich traditions of this festival. They helped prepare Chow Mein for lunch as a cultural food experience and engaged in hands-on gardening, reinforcing healthy eating habits as part of our Healthy Heart Programme.

They also crafted beautiful lanterns, symbolising light and hope, which they proudly displayed. The celebrations concluded with a lively dragon dance, bringing excitement and joy to the day.

Through these experiences, our tamariki have gained a deeper appreciation for different cultures, fostering a sense of unity and respect for diversity.
