Ahoy Our Pirate Adventure at Preschool
This week our tamariki set sail on a swashbuckling adventure for Pirate Day. A day full of imagination, creativity, and a little bit of treasure! From making pirate gear to baking tasty treats and exploring Riccarton Bush on a treasure hunt, it was an exciting journey.
Crafting Our Pirate Crew
Our Pirate Day began with the tamariki diving into creative activities to transform themselves into pirates. They crafted their own pirate flags, having to practice fine motor skills and hand eye coordination by cutting and gluing. Next, they made eye patches and decorated hats, each one unique, with some friends even bringing their own from home. As the tamariki worked, conversations flowed about what it means to be a pirate. We talked about the boats and the oceans they sailed on, the maps they would have had and the clothing they would have worn. These creative moments encouraged self-expression, collaboration and lots of imaginative play.
Off to Riccarton Bush
A Treasure Hunt Awaits With our pirate hats firmly on, we set off on an excursion to Riccarton Bush for a treasure hunt and picnic. Armed with a nature treasure hunt list and our pirates flags, the tamariki explored the beautiful native bush, searching for hidden treasures along the way. They found stick swords, blackbird companions, and other natural treasures. It was a fantastic way to use our listening and observation skills, questioning, visualisation and sorting and grouping skills. It was a great way to connect with nature while nurturing their imaginations.
Baking Pirate Treats
Back at preschool the tamariki got to work baking pirate boat biscuits and mermaid treats. They carefully rolled out their piece of dough before used the cutters and decorating with marshmallows and m&ms. The baking was a great way to develop fine motor skills as tamariki measured, mixed and decorated. Plus, practice teamwork and patience as they waited for their turn to create. By the end we had a table full of colorful treats fit for any pirate crew.
A Day of Fun and Learning
Pirate Day was full of valuable learning experiences. The tamariki explored creativity through crafting, built social skills through teamwork and connected with the natural world during the treasure hunt.
