Here in the Kiwi room, we enjoy baking with the children. Baking offers Tamariki lots of benefits beyond the obvious - having fun and getting to eat the fruits of your labour. Baking activities create a great social environment in which Tamariki can learn about teamwork and turn taking.

They provide Tamariki with opportunities to work on and enhance their fine and gross motor skills. Whipping, creaming, and rubbing in, all use different movements and muscle groups and strengthen the muscles of the hand, wrist, and arm. Pouring liquids requires the hands and eyes to work together, developing hand-eye co-ordination.

Baking activities provide a language rich environment in which Tamariki are exposed to positional, mathematical, and descriptive language. Baking is also a great way to extend children’s knowledge of the wider world by talking about where the ingredients have come from. Reading recipes aloud and pointing out print on ingredient packages, measuring tools, and recipes, shows Tamariki that print has meaning and purpose and can be read by others, while counting, measuring out and adding ingredients introduces Tamariki to early maths concepts. So why not enjoy some quality family time together in the kitchen and support your child's development by doing some baking at home.
