BestStart Elles Road Mitre 10 Excursion
This morning a small group of tamariki embarked on a short walk to Mitre 10 to learn about garden care. The excursion aimed to instill a sense of environmental responsibility and practical knowledge about gardening in our young learners and kaiako.
As we arrived, the friendly staff at Mitre 10 greeted us as we quickly made our way to the garden centre , where we were introduced to Ruth, Ruth showed us various plants, and shared with us was of maintaining a healthy garden. The children were fascinated by the different types of plants and kaiako eagerly asked questions. We learned how composting can enrich the soil and reduce waste, aligning with the values of sustainability and kaitiakitanga (guardianship of the environment) emphasized in Te Whāriki.
This hands-on learning experience directly supports Te Whāriki’s strand of Exploration | Mana Aotūroa, which encourages children to explore, connect with the natural world, and develop working theories about the environment. The outing also fostered a sense of Belonging | Mana Whenua, as the children understood their role in caring for their community and environment.
Our tamariki had so much fun getting out into the community and were super excited to bring our knowledge back to the centre to support the rest of our peers and kaiako to take care of our gardens.
