Celebrating ANZAC
In the Prep room we celebrate ANZAC day in many ways. The build up to the day we had some special visitors come and speak with us about their time they served in the war as well as showing us their medals. One of our teachers brought in her grandads suitcase that had his jacket from world war 2 as well as some books he had and his medals. We did many different art activities making poppies, ANZAC Ted as well as making our wreath of hand prints to lay on the Kaiapoi memorial. The children loved the book ANZAC Ted and during this time it become a favourite to read. The day before ANZAC day we took a short walk down to the war memorial where we lay our wreath, read the plaques on the memorial as well as looked at the crosses from all of the people from the local area who serviced in the wars. This allowed the children the opportunity to be apart of their local community, showing respect for those who have served for us.
"There are opportunities for children to learn about the wider world by finding out about places of importance in the community through stories, visitors or trips". -Te Whāriki pg, 34.
