Community Connections Enhance our Turangawaewae

In the Kauri room we are making connections to the people, places and things within our wider world | te waihanga hononga. This can be seen through our daily curriculum learning opportunities and involving ourselves within our local community.

Every Wednesday during Term Four, a small group of tamariki will visit our local park Russell Square to explore the playground and collect natural resources such as sticks, leaves and pine cones for our art area and loose parts play. This excursion is to support their interest in physical challenge, exploration and social and emotional competence.

This local park holds significance to our localised curriculum as there is a giant whale tail sculpture at the entrance of this park. This represents a rich connection to the land and sea and flourishing coexistence of cultures. The geometric patterning of nature provides the blueprint for strength and growth, and the tail flick of a great whale propels a forward momentum.

Our centre priorities embrace Whānaungatanga, Kaitiakitanga and Mana Reo, therefore empowering our tamariki to be active explorers within their community enhances their sense of mana whenua. Children learn and develop best when their culture, knowledge and community are affirmed, and what better way than to visit our local park.
