Culture and Identity at Onehunga

At BestStart Onehunga we take pride in participating in cultural celebrations, recently these included Tongan Language week, Ethiopian New Year, Te Wiki o te Reo Māori Week and the Autumn Moon Festival.

Our tamariki dressed in cultural attire to celebrate Tongan language week, they also experimented with traditional weaving activities, and we sang and danced to Tongan music. Our whānau took part in our celebration by wearing traditional Tongan clothes.

Our whānau brought traditional flowers to the centre to celebrate Ethiopian New Year, as well as dressing in cultural clothes when they visited our centre. We further celebrated the day by singing and dancing to traditional Ethiopian songs and created flowery head bands.

We celebrated Māori language week by creating koru, our tamariki researched the story, “How Maui Slowed Down the Sun.’ We also enjoyed flax weaving and sang and danced to our favourite waiata.

During the Autumn Moon Festival, our Japanese whānau taught kaiako and tamariki to make moon cakes. We also sang some special songs together and made beautiful lanterns.

Celebrating the cultures of our centre and our community is a great strength at BestStart Onehunga
