Discovering Insects and Bugs at BestStart Vivian Street
Throughout the past few months, here at BestStart Vivian Street, we have been going on a bug and insect adventure! As part of our group planning and assessment kaiako find a strong current interest of tamariki, and build on this. At the moment, this is insects and bugs. Over the last few months tamariki have been engaged in numerous outdoor bug hunts, bug bingo, bug art collage, insect habitat painting, puka puka, excursions to experience different insects that we may not find within our centre environment and much more!
This subject of insects has enabled the children to further their knowledge and working theories surrounding other living creatures. It has encouraged them to link things and places and most importantly, know how to show kindness to them. Our priorities for learning throughout these months directs the teaching strategies and learning opportunities that tamariki are engaged in.
The priorities link directly to our early childhood curriculum, Te Whariki. These have been: Belonging (mana whenua), by making connections between people, places and things in their world (te waihanga hononga). Contribution (mana tangata), by using a range of strategies and skills to play and learn with others (te ngākau aroha). We can’t wait to continue on this journey and discover more ngarara (insects)!
