In an age where screens often dominate our daily lives, the Wild@Heart bush learning program led by Mr. Kevin here at BestStart is a breath of fresh air. Nestled in the heart of nature, this program offers our tamariki a unique opportunity to explore, learn, and grow outside the confines of a traditional classroom right here in Invercargill.

The Wild@Heart Program

Every week, each of our five centers embarks on a day-long adventure into the bush. These excursions are designed to immerse tamariki in nature, allowing them to learn through exploration and hands-on experiences. From identifying local plants and animals to understanding the intricate balance of ecosystems, every session is an opportunity for discovery.

These explorations are led by Mr. Kevin who believes in the importance of experiential learning, where tamariki engage directly with their surroundings. Whether they are building shelters, tracking animal signs, or sliding down mud hills, our tamariki are not just passive observers; they are active participants in their own learning journey.

Who is Mr. Kevin?

Mr. Kevin is more than just a teacher; he is a passionate advocate for outdoor education and environmental stewardship. With years of experience and a genuine love for nature, he brings an infectious enthusiasm to each session. His goal is to inspire tamariki to connect with the environment, fostering curiosity and respect for the world around them.

The Value of Learning in Nature

Learning in nature offers countless benefits. Research shows that outdoor education can enhance creativity, improve mental well-being, and foster a sense of belonging. By spending time in the bush, tamariki develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills while also gaining a deeper appreciation for the environment.

Mr. Kevin understands the profound impact that nature can have on a child’s development. He creates an inclusive and supportive environment where every tamariki feels valued and encouraged to explore their interests. His approach not only builds confidence but also cultivates collaboration and communication skills among peers. Wild@Heart is instilling a sense of responsibility and stewardship in our tamariki.
