Excursions to our local coffee shop
At BestStart Kaikorai Valley Road, we believe in the power of community and real-world experiences. Every fortnight, a small group of our oldest children embark on an exciting excursion to one of our local coffee shops.
Here, they enjoy a fluffy (a child-friendly, frothy milk drink) and engage in delightful conversations with their friends. These outings are more than just a treat; they are a reflection of our commitment to Te Whāriki, the early childhood education curriculum, and the Ngāi Tahu education strategy, Te Rautaki Mātauranga. Te Whāriki emphasizes the importance of children learning through relationships and interactions within their community.
Our coffee shop visits provide a rich context for children to develop social skills, build relationships, and understand their place in the wider world. They learn to navigate social settings, practice communication, and observe community roles in action.
Te Rautaki Mātauranga focuses on fostering a sense of identity and belonging among Ngāi Tahu children. By participating in these community excursions, our children connect with their local environment and culture, reinforcing their sense of belonging and identity. These experiences help them appreciate the value of community and the importance of maintaining strong, supportive relationships. Through these fortnightly excursions, we aim to nurture confident, connected, and actively involved learners who feel a strong sense of belonging in their community.
