Fijian Language Week
This year's theme is Me vakabulabulataki, vakamareqeti, ka vakaqaqacotaki na vosa vakaviti, which means Nurture, Preserve, and Sustain the Fijian language. Fijian Language Week is a meaningful celebration, especially in multicultural New Zealand, where it fosters greater understanding and appreciation of Fijian culture and language. The event highlights the importance of cultural diversity and encourages New Zealanders to embrace the traditions of Fiji, including its language, music, dance, and unique practices. By participating in events and engaging with the Fijian community, people can gain a deeper respect for the cultural heritage of Fiji, contributing to New Zealand’s inclusive society.
At BestStart Kauri Flats, we had the opportunity to learn about Fijian culture through Fijian Language Week celebrations. Our tamariki engaged in creative arts and crafts inspired by Fijian culture and landscapes, creating palm trees and sea animals. Our talented teachers also did beautiful face painting, and we enjoyed dancing to Fijian music. During mat time, teachers shared their knowledge about Fijian culture with the children.
We ended Fijian Language Week by dressing in floral and tropical clothing. We will continue to celebrate language weeks as they help us learn about other cultures and languages. Vinaka vakalevu to everyone!
