Two of our Nido Kaiako created a Kete of resources which link to our centre purakau of Kupe and the Giant Wheke - this resource is very well used with our youngest tamariki. Our tamariki recognise Kupe, Te Wheke and the waka from the story and they love holding the stick puppets and looking at the photos of Kupe around Wellington city.

Parents are able to take this kete home and our tamariki love to share their learning with their whanau. One of our whanau took this resource home over the weekend and shared some photos of our tamariki showing his daddy the resources and teaching his daddy the names of the characters of the story - he showed the stick puppets and said "Kupe", "waka" and "Octopus (Te Wheke)".

The parents were very impressed as they hadn't heard their child say some of the words before. They also shared their child showed them the emotions book and how their child copied all the different facial expressions. They took the resource out into Wellington city to find the statue of Kupe near Te Papa. They got to see the new waka at Frank Kitts park and then walked along the waterfront and found the statue of Kupe - their son was so happy to see that the statue matched one of the cards in his kete.

It's so great to see our whanau engaging with our resources in their own home environment and sharing their photos with us!
