Growing our Gardens
In the prep room at Best Start Kaiapoi we have been working hard over the last month at growing our gardens. We have had many seeds planted, that we have all worked together in caring for, taking turns at ensuing they are watered regularly and in the sun to grow. We have had some strawberry plants gifted to us from one of our whānau that we have planted in our veggie pod and we are enjoying watching them grow!
We have also planted a whole planter box full of potatoes that we are hoping will be ready for harvest around Christmas time to share with our families. Each week there are many opportunities for the children to go and weed the garden, water the garden and check to see if there is any Kai ready for us to enjoy and share. We also have a worm farm and compost bin in the prep room that we have Enviro ed come and support us in learning all about how to care for our worms to ensure we get worm tea for the garden, and worm castings for the soil.
The children love the opportunities to learn more about caring for their environment and they take such pride in growing and sharing the Kai.
