Growing seeds for Spring!
Sustainability is important to us here at BestStart Kaikorai Valley road and we are always looking for ways to help educate our tamariki to become kaitiaki of our land. One of the ways we have been doing this in the Pitau classroom is planting seeds for Spring. It was a big job for the tamariki to fill up the pots with compost before the kaiako helped to plant some seeds.
We are going to grow some beautiful flowers and some microgreens that will be a yummy snack for our centre bunny, Patch. We will have to look after our seeds carefully making sure they are watered and get enough sun. This is such a great way way to gain knowledge about our environment and the world around us, it helps to develop some practical life skills as well, such as looking after those around us including our pets.
Activities like this also foster great social skills. The tamariki all took turns filling the pots as they worked alongside each other. Our planter boxes are going to look beautiful and full of colour once the flowers bloom. The children will be able to see the reward for all their hard work.
