Happy Heart Day at BestStart Totara Street
Encouraging healthy food choices is something we are extremely proud of here at Beststart Totara Street. Each year we participate in the "Red Heart Appeal Day" and enjoy a day of delicious, nutritious foods, red-themed activities, and plenty of outdoor time. Our staff are always actively involved and enjoy role modelling great habits to our tamariki.
We are proud holders of the Pā-Harakeke Award – the gold star for Healthy Heart. We earned this award by creating a healthy environment and engaging with the wider community in healthy eating and physical activity. Our menu has been specifically tailored to incorporate all the aspects of a healthy, balanced diet while providing all the nutrients our growing tamariki's bodies need.
Physical activity is essential for good physical and mental health and well-being. This is demonstrated within our programme with our weekly "nature excursions". We rotate the children in attendance weekly to ensure everyone gets a go. The walk is a gentle 10-minute stroll to Spa Park, where our explorers can safely take off and explore their surroundings. Incorporating small activities such as these supports the development of healthy bones, muscles, joints and flexibility. Exercise is also known to develop vital connections in the brain, leading to improved concentration and thinking skills.
