Inquiry Based Learning not just for our Tamariki
Inquiry based learning is at the core of what we do at Kapiti Rd. Inquiry-based learning is a teaching practice that encourages children to use critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills to find the solution to a problem. From the child’s perspective, this type of learning helps them go beyond their natural curiosity and think outside the box to reach the solution to their problem, making learning more fun.
For teachers, inquiry learning is a great way to encourage children to investigate beyond what’s right in front of them, creating more engaged learners. For our teachers at the Centre we use a very similar action research process and we call this Internal evaluation. Internal evaluation is an integral part of our how our team seeks quality outcomes for our tamariki and families at Kapiti Rd. Earlier this year we looked at how we could implement a purposeful, respectful and deliberate learning environment.
We wanted to offer environments that are welcoming, flexible, content-rich, and organised, that were supporting children in their learning process before they even walk into the centre. Over the last few months we have worked hard as a team to create spaces that are curated to be aesthetically pleasing without being contrived. They are welcoming spaces that spark joy and a love of learning, and where children are encouraged to collaborate, communicate, create, experiment and explore.
Our next Internal evaluation has now commenced “how do we create a sustainable edible garden for all seasons within our learning environment?” This internal evaluation question is all about our Centre’s commitment to a long-term sustainability journey, where tamariki develop the skills and the desire to care for our world, because the fate of it is in their hands.
