International "Talk like a Pirate Day" at BestStart Papamoa Plaza
Ahoy, mateys! BestStart Papamoa Plaza set sail for a swashbuckling adventure on International Talk Like a Pirate Day. The centre was transformed into a pirate’s cove, filled with treasure maps, flags, and pirate ships crafted by our tamariki. Dressed in pirate hats, eye patches, and striped shirts, both tamariki and kaiako embraced the pirate spirit, ready for a day of excitement and learning.
The day kicked off with pirate storytelling and singing, where tamariki gathered around to hear thrilling tales of treasure hunting and daring escapes. Following that, the children embarked on their own treasure hunt around the center. Armed with maps and pirate phrases, they navigated various challenges to uncover hidden "gold" (chocolate coins). The excitement on their faces as they uncovered each clue was priceless.
We also hosted a pirate-themed arts and crafts session, where tamariki created their own pirate hats and flags. The highlight of the day, however, was our pirate sing-along, with tamariki shouting hearty "Aye aye, captain!" and "Arrr!" throughout. The day wasn't just about fun but also about language and communication development. Engaging in role play, our tamariki learned new vocabulary and practiced working together as a crew.
It was a fantastic way to foster creativity, teamwork, and a sense of belonging. International Talk Like a Pirate Day at BestStart Papamoa Plaza was a resounding success—full of laughter, imagination, and discovery. Aye, we’ll surely be marking it on the calendar again next year!
