It is the season of gardening at BestStart East Tamaki Road
As today was a shiny, sunny day, our preschoolers enjoyed planting some seeds! Since we had some carrot, beetroot, and spinach seeds, I invited anyone who wanted to do gardening!
Vaidik, Vaani, Ashaya, Rubab, Muaz, Taneesha, Jiana, and Arif all came together with a lot of excitement. The children enjoyed cleaning our planter boxes and planting the seeds. Arif shared that we need to make holes to put seeds, then Vaidik added "we can sprinkle seeds on the soil". Taneesha told me that she helps her aaja (grandfather) with gardening. I enjoyed listening to their stories and they all had knowledge about gardening.
Gardening is really beneficial for children as it gives them a sense of responsibility – from caring for plants to developing an understanding as they learn about cause and effect (for example, plants die without water, and weeds compete with plants). It also builds their self-confidence from achieving their goals and enjoying the food they have grown.
They loved planting these seeds with their friends and they shared their knowledge with each other. After planting seeds I asked them what should we do next, and they replied "We need to water the plants". They all look forward to looking after their garden throughout Spring!
