Celebrating Matariki 2024
Ngā mihi o Matariki, te tau hou Māori! Matariki is the start of the Māori New Year, signified by the rising of the start cluster (Matariki) drawing the end of one cycle and the emergence of a new one. It is a time for celebration, remembrance, growth and renewal. Here at Beststart Lambie we celebrated this by sharing music, kani kani, crafts and kai with our wonderful whanau.
As our tuakana children of the centre bravely shared their performance with our whanau, we invited them to join in for a kani kani with us for some fun and giggles. As our older tamariki continued their celebrations through more kani kani and craft experiences set out, our younger tamariki embraced Papatūānuku by giving their own gift to our whenua planting beautiful plants in our garden with our whanau. Finishing off our celebration we all sat down to enjoy some yummy kai with our tamariki and whanau. As we all came together to celebrate Matariki as one big whanau, our tamariki, whanau and teachers connected through Maori tikanga growing our Whanaungtanga and giving both our tamariki and whanau their mana through dance, craft, planting and the sharing of kai.
As our celebrations came to an end whanau relationships were strengthen and grown through korero and the sharing of their tamariki’s experiences of Matariki. As our celebration came to an end we now look forward to continuing and flourishing our parent relationships and creating new relationships through future celebrations that embrace Tikanga Māori values and practices.
