Learning through art at BestStart Pukuatua
Art can inspire, delight, be an outlet for expression, allow you to explore different textures, smells, patterns and here at BestStart Pukuatua, our under-two unit allows art to grow and develop essential life-long skills.
It's not just holding a paintbrush or making patterns on a piece of paper. It's about understanding the skill of holding the brush or pen and how our small motor skills will be developed and defined by learning this. It's about creating with freedom on a blank canvas with no idea in mind. It also encompasses one of our 16 Areas of Play BestStart specialises in.
In our under-two space, we provide a lot of experiences that allow for the youngest members of our crew to experience and explore art in a sensory way. By using materials that our tamariki can safely taste, touch, smell, look at and mix, they are getting another quality learning experience that allows them to understand, what different textures are.
They are learning to hold the pencil that then helps to hold a spoon, hold a bottle, pick up smaller toys, and form the pincer grasp (the thumb to the finger hold). Here at BestStart Pukautua, we pride ourselves in allowing all our tamariki to experience some form of art for further skill building.
