Literacy in Play
Here at Hokowhitu our teaching, activities, and environment are set up to support and invite your child to explore their literacy, numeracy, emotional, social, and physical development. Through play-based activities your child is developing skills and an understanding of knowledge in ways that are meaningful to them.
Teachers use their knowledge about child development and literacy development to provide a programme for your child to construct the skills necessary to become lifelong learners. Here at BestStart Hokowhitu, our environment is always set up with provocations and activities to encourage children to develop literacy skills at the right rate for them.
We intentionally provide play opportunities that extend children’s social relationships and their language and communication with one another through their play. Literacy in preschool comes under three areas - oral language, written language and reading skills.
All three areas are connected: children’s oral language provides a foundation for their reading and writing, and reading and writing expands children’s vocabulary and an understanding of language. Building on these skills from birth to 5 years old supports children in having an effective foundation of literacy skill sets from which to grow which is the key to success at school.
