Mai te mara ki te kihini - From the garden to the kitchen
It's wild to think we're already in term four - time is just flying by! On this beautiful sunny day, kaiako Monica took a group of our teina (toddlers) to harvest some kai from our Mara (garden).
Monica talked about how special it is that we are able to grow our own vegetables here at Home of the Brave, our potatoes weren't ready yet but there were some carrots and some HUGE radishes. Being outdoors in our Mara, the fresh air worked wonders for encouraging using our muscles and body to pull out some vegetables, fostering mahi tahi to work together to get the job done.
Many conversations were had amongst our tamariki about the size, shape, and smell of the vegetables. We took the vegetables inside to share with all our tamariki. Monica used this opportunity to koorero about atua Rongo-maa-Taane (guardian of cultivated food and one of the offspring of Rangi-nui and Papa-tuu-aa-nuku). Our tamariki were part of cleaning after harvesting, and then enjoyed the fruits of their labour for afternoon tea.
This whakataukii is very fitting for this learning - Naaku te rourou, naau te rourou, ka ora ai te iwi. With your food basket and my food basket, the people will thrive
