Our teachers have been working on Matariki this week, as part of the Waita star Koka Ripeka decided to do an experince with them using kaimoana and harakeke. Koka bought in some kaimoana for the children to hold (explore) which was a good experience for them to touch and use all there senses, then Koka took a group of children to gather some harakeke and explained and showed them how to cut the flax from the plant, the children placed it on the table and then used the Kutae shell to make muka from harakeke .

Here are some of our children engaing in old Tipuna ways of doing and exploring. As we continue on with our Matariki celebration the kaiako are engaging in a more traditional ways of teaching the children about the matariki stars, this includes harvesting and gathering food to share within our community and whanau as well as creating beautiful artwork and practising kapahaka for our matariki celebration evening. We will be sharing a video of the Matariki stars in action and have some wonderful tradition activities for our Whanau to engage in on the evening.
