At BestStart Herewini Stree, we laid out marble run pieces for our four-year-old tamariki to build and construct with. They absolutely loved it! They worked together, collaborating, experimenting, and coming up with different creations every time. Children learn through play - by doing, asking questions, interacting with others, devising theories about how things work, trying ideas out, and making purposeful use of resources.

In early childhood education, play is valued as meaningful learning. Here at BestStart Herewini Street, our kaiako recognise the importance of spontaneous play. We encourage tamariki to develop confidence in their play as they set and solve problems, use trial and error, observe, plan, and enter into discussions with others. We know that playing in this way also allows children to work closely alongside others, developing dispositions that will serve them as they grow.

They learn to take turns, suggest ideas, and share space with others. These skills form part of a lifelong learning journey that will support them as they prepare for school readiness. They had so much fun, moving the carefully constructed marble run to different locations in the classroom, making smaller versions and testing their creations for speed and agility. I wonder what they will create next?
