Matariki Celebration at BestStart Bader Street
We had a wonderful evening last week celebrating Matariki here at BestStart Bader Street. Matariki is a time for coming together and celebrating, acknowledging the past, and looking ahead to what the future holds. We were lucky enough to have some whānau join us in the lead-up to our Matariki evening to teach the tamariki how to weave harakeke and make poi.
This was so beneficial for the tamariki as they experienced new hands-on learning opportunities in a group activity. They were able to connect culture to learning in an authentic way. The tamariki also enjoyed participating in a range of arts and crafts to decorate our classrooms. We learnt about the 9 stars of Matariki and what each star meant. The Matariki evening was very successful with high whānau engagement.
The tamariki put on performances for whānau, and they each made a small korowai that will be displayed on our wall to represent each whānau. We then all sat together and had a yummy kai with soups that were made from vegetables whānau had contributed, followed by dessert. Everyone had a wonderful evening and we look forward to doing it all again next Matariki!
