Matariki Celebrations
Celebrating Matariki at Beststart Oamaru Kindy helps our tamariki connect to shared experiences within their wider community. The tamariki eagerly anticipate Matariki, and this year was no different. We celebrate Matariki various ways, such as waiata, art projects, kite making, reading pukapuka and a star trail outside.
Through our structured four year old group time the tamariki worked on making stars which contained messages of what they are grateful for, these were displayed for whanau to read. What the tamariki look forward to most is extending their manaaki and hosting their whanau to our shared kai evening. They arrive in the morning bringing vegetables, excited and ready to begin the job of making soup. All hands on deck are required for this job and the tamariki gain a sense of pride that they have made an important contribution.
Arriving back to kindy in the evening they have a special surprise for their whanau, as they have been practicing some waita! After the performance there is much cheering and its time for kai. Fry bread is prepared by the kaiako and it doesnt last long! Another successful Matariki celebration with our whanau and we look forward to next year already!
