Here at BestStart Kelvin Street we love music and dance. From pois, parachutes, scarves, the freeze game and everything in between, music is a daily occurrence. We have music areas with instruments, scarves, ribbons, rakau sticks, poi and more where tamariki can freely experiment or join in small and large group sessions with their peers.

This is sometimes backed by music where they experience tempo, rhythm and pitch, and they also use these props to inspire different forms of dance. The tamariki learn to recognise and enjoy sounds, instruments and a variety of music. Physical co-ordination, fitness and spatial awareness are all developed through dance. It is also a great way for tamariki to feel a sense of belonging and pride in their culture as we listen and move to a variety of songs from all around the world.

The tamariki are able to express themselves and their feelings through dance and their imagination. We love to sing! Singing is a wonderful way to extend the language of the tamariki in a fun way. We sometimes have music playing in the background to create ambience and a sense of calm. Other times we’ll play favourite songs and nursery rhymes for children to sing along to. Songs with actions are always popular and are great ways to challenge their coordination and motor skills.

Music and dance are great vehicles for learning and development. They support children’s intellectual, imaginative, emotional, social and cultural growth. They are enjoyable, soothing and help develop listening skills, concentration, coordination, cooperation, communication and memory, as well as being a valuable resource for creativity. Here at Best-Start Kelvin Street we love music and dance! Come along and join in our fun!
