Olympics at BestStart Te Whariki
What an exciting month to be supporting our New Zealand team in the Olympics. The tamariki have been involved in many different opportunities, relating to the Olympics, including painting the Olympic rings, practicing events and watching videos of our New Zealand team wining medals. We also had our very own Olympics Day, which we celebrated with our room names. Each room created their own flag that the native bird of the room was displayed on as well as flags of the countries from the tamariki in each room. Then they chose a colour to represent from the Olympic rings and facilitated an event.
The day started with an opening ceremony, where every room came together and we walked around the playground. Our Tui room (Prep room) created an Olympic torch to opening the games. The tamariki then split off into groups and became involved in the events. We had a range of events such as long jump, egg and spoon races, pram/baby racing, obstacle course and bike races. Each child received a gold medal for their efforts. This opportunity allowed the tamariki to be involved in team sports and work together, further developing their social competency abilities as well as collaborating as a team. This encouraged tuakana/teina as well as looking at the different cultures in the individuals rooms and as a centre as a whole.
