With the world a buzz with Olympic excitement we decided to bring a slice of the Olympic magic to our preschool classroom. A Grand Opening Ceremony To kick off our Olympic festivities, the tamariki participated in their very own opening ceremony!

We paraded around the playground with the Olympic anthem playing in the background, waving flags, holding torches and wearing medals that we had created earlier in the week. This activity was a wonderful way for our tamariki to learn about the importance of celebrating each other and the unique diversity we have in our world. A Brush with Olympic Glory One of the highlights for both our tamariki and kaiako has been a visit from a real Olympic medal! The tamariki were thrilled to get to hold the medal, it sparked some amazing conversations and inspired us to make our own.

Our passionate kaiako Jenna held a fantastic mat time where we talked about the dedication and commitment it takes to become an athlete, and about some of our most inspiring Olympic achievements as a country. Classroom Olympic Events The heart of our celebration was the series of fun and friendly Olympic-style events. From long jump to weightlifting, gymnastics to javelin, shotput to kayaking, we have done it all!

Everyone had the chance to participate and showcase their skills. We even had special medals that were handed out on our makeshift podiums and when the medal holders would go home, they would then pick who got to look after the medal next. The focus was on having fun, trying new things, and supporting each other. It was great to see the tamariki cheering for their peers, learning that it's not just about winning.

Learning Through Play Throughout our Olympic activities, our tamariki have been developing their knowledge of different countries and cultures, discovering that the Olympics are a global event that brings people together from all over the world. This has also given us a fantastic opportunity for physical activity, helping our tamariki develop their gross motor skills, coordination, perseverance and most importantly, to have fun while being active.
