Our Amazing Body
The current topic in the Centaurus classroom (4 year olds) is ‘My Body’. So far, we have learned about our skeletons and where the biggest bones are. We also discovered the smallest bone is in our ear!
This week our learning was focused on the circulatory system. We have been doing lots of activities to help us explore blood and the different parts of it. We used lentils (red blood cells), chickpeas (white blood cells), rice (platelets) and slightly yellow water (plasma) in our sensory bin. We used different coloured playdough too.
We even made collages with different colours of paper and fabric to represent the different parts of our blood. We have found out that it is our heart that pumps this around our bodies using arteries, veins and capillaries and if we get a cut, it is our platelets that link together to mend the cut and make a scab.
This work links to many learning outcomes Te Whariki; in particular exploration strand, children make sense of their worlds by generating and refining working theories, and the wellbeing strand, children keep themselves healthy and care for themselves. There are ample opportunities to practice playing with and alongside others, (contribution strand), as we participate in the activities and extend vocabulary too (communication strand).
At BestStart Huntsbury our philosophy states that we make learning fun and the many different ways we have explored blood are living proof of this. The children in the Centaurus classroom are engaged, active learners.
