We have been looking for something that will extend their messy play. Kristin gave us an idea to create a mud pit. We looked around to see which area was best suited for our play. The only place we found was the one covered with rocks.

I started clearing out the rocks first, then the children noticed and asked me what I was doing, so I explained to them what I was doing and what the outcome would be. They helped me remove the rocks individually to create a circle and make it into our mud pit area. We tried our best to remove the rocks but they were buried right to the bottom of the ground. They got their tools to use and dig the pit. We continued this until we were satisfied and that it was time to put water and dishwashing liquid to soften the mud and make it messier.

Once everyone was involved in the process, they decided that it was now their turn to finish what we started. I let them have an engaging play with one another. Sensory: due to the rocks that we were not able to remove, as they picked up the mud it will come with bits of rocks or little stones. This process helps to give them a deeper feeling of sensory satisfaction.

Cooperation as they continue to play along with each other. As they manipulate the mud with their hands the feeling of enriching experiences and delightful exploration encourages creativity and an understanding of the world around them
