Our local Manu - April 2024
Nestled in the heart of Johnsonville, our centre is just a leisurely 5-minute stroll from the majestic Mt Tarikākā. Our location offering a gateway to the enchanting world of native flora and fauna. Here, amidst the lush landscapes of our local environment, our tamariki are treated to captivating encounters with New Zealand's indigenous wildlife.
Recently, we were delighted to observe a flock of five Kererū gracefully feasting on the seeds and berries adorning our school's trees. Engaging in hands-on exploration, our tamariki eagerly delve into the realm of ornithology (the study of Birds), learning to discern native birds by their distinctive calls and vibrant plumage. Armed with this newfound knowledge, our tamariki learn about becoming Kaitiaki; , becoming guardians entrusted with the care of our environment's mana, tapu, and mauri – safeguarding the vitality of its flora and fauna, waterways, and landscapes.
This nurturing of Kaitiakitanga instills a profound connection to the natural world, instigating a sense of responsibility towards preserving our precious habitats for future generations. The sight of these magnificent manu (birds) perched amidst our trees ignited meaningful discussions about the intricate relationships between manu and their homes in the trees.
Delving deeper, our tamariki uncover the vital role birds play in dispersing seeds, while trees provide essential nesting sites, shelter, and sustenance. Through these observations, our tamariki cultivate an enduring appreciation for the delicate harmony woven between birds and trees, reinforcing the importance of nurturing and conserving our rich natural heritage for generations to come.
