Our lovely community police officer Meg came in-centre today to support learning for our Ihutai tamariki around things they can do for themselves to ask for help and to keep safe, lifting mana. Tamariki (and us!) learnt that only police officers are allowed to wear a checker hat in New Zealand.

Meg also cleverly used her uniform and car to support children in being able to recognise how she was a police officer, using colour, letter and logo early literacies to support that learning. Another aspect of learning for children was being able to remember their full name, full address (including city and/or suburb as many roads have the same names in different cities) as well as their phone number and the emergency number 111.

She explained to the tamariki that remembering this information is really helpful in case they needed help, being able to say this to a police officer or another adult would enable the adult to help reunite them with their families. Several of our tamariki already knew much of this information and Meg invited them to share their learning with their classmates. Such a great tip to understand what to teach our children to help them be able to help themselves and others. Noho ora mai The Ferry Rd Team
