We are so lucky here at BestStart Silverstream to be so close to rural properties and August has given us so many amazing learning experiences. One of our wonderful BestStart Silverstream whānau brought in one their lambs for us to see. The tamariki were so excited to see the lamb walk in. No one was apprehensive, they were only curious. The lamb kept the tamariki engaged through pats and hugs. It was exciting for the tamariki to watch the lamb walk around the outdoor environment. This experience has so many fantastic learning outcomes. The tamariki are connecting with the lamb - its characteristics, its name, the noises it makes, what it eats and how it moves. We also made a connection with our community, its people, places and things. This is through the whānau, and what we might see (the lamb) when out and about in Silverstream. We have also been working very hard on being more creative with the art experiences we provide. We achieved this through using different techniques of painting, materials, textures, and a variety of farm animals. The different techniques of painting we used include, for the sheep we used pom-poms, for the chick we used forks, for the pig we used hand prints and for the cow made a collaborative group painting using brushes. We have been extending this interest further with many waiata and pukapuka. We look forward to exploring more learning with a focus on animals during September.
