Ngā tamariki at BestStart Oamaru Kindy love acting out the roles of our community helpers, doctors and nurses, police men and women and fire fighters. Their imaginations have been encouraged by the kaiako through books, songs, dress ups and loose parts provided in both our indoor and outdoor environment which have many spaces to explore these recreations.

On their way to the fire today they had to stop for a cow on the road, make a second stop to recheck seatbelts, and make a third stop to fix a flat tyre! What tireless work it is for firefighters, and for our tamariki, who through play are learning to take turns, share their ideas, listen to others, work with and alongside others and make connections with the people and things in their world. The language between the children is full of learning theories developed through experiences both at home and at kindy.

Imaginative play is such a rich learning experience for children. They connect ideas about their everyday lives, they socialise and learn to cooperate with others and in this way build their communication skills as they choose roles and create stories together. Language, social and thinking skills are at the core of children’s dramatic play.
