RIE philosophy in our Infant classroom

Kia Ora, This month's blog focuses on our Under two’s classroom, Tui. In our Tui classroom here at BestStart Great North Road we have implemented the RIE philosophy. The Pikler or Resources for Infant Educarers (RIE) approach has 3 main features which are; 

  • Trusting relationships with a consistent caregiver who demonstrates respect for the child and understands his or her needs. 
  • Encouragement of children’s capacity for self-initiated activity and active participation in routines. 
  • Respectful relationships and communication between caregivers and the child’s parents. 

We feel this aligns with our values and works well for us as a team. What does this look like at Great North Road? Through implementing RIE and respectful practice in the room, tamariki are learning that they are important and have agency over themselves and their learning. They are learning that they are entitled to respect and that kaiako understands their wants and needs. 

By following their individual home routines, it helps make this feel like an extension of home where tamariki can feel safe and secure. They are learning that when they need something and communicate this to us (through cries, gestures, body language, etc) they will be attended to by kind and caring kaiako. They are learning that their choices are valued and matter to us and they can decide things for themselves. 

Kaiako respectfully ensures care routine moments such as feeding, nappy changes, and dressing children are unhurried and we show the tamariki our full attention. We believe key teaching works well in our classroom as we all make an effort to create relationships & bonds with tamariki who are not our 'key children'. We are all familiar with all tamariki routines and this is made easier with their individual routine templates displayed in our class. We are all happy to help each other carry out these routines and ensure all needs are met for our tamariki.
