Here in our Pepi Room at BestStart Delta Avenue, our tamariki have shown great interest in playing musical instruments. During our small group times, we have been letting our littlest tamariki explore the sounds of the different musical instruments.

With the help of our Kaiako they have been exploring the sounds of loud and soft, fast and slow, and have even been playing their instruments to music, jamming to their own beats with “The Wheels on the Bus”, being a firm favorite amongst the tamariki, this is their favorite part of the day!

Our Kaiako has built on the tamariki’s love for nursery rhymes by incorporating musical instruments during music time where we shake, drum, clap, and dance to the beat and rhythm of the songs. When our tamariki engage in these activities they are building on their co-ordination skills, expressing their feelings, and building their vocabulary through hearing new words.

The instruments are developing their fine motor skills as well as their confidence when they see what they can do as well as the praise and applause that goes with it! We have found that music helps so much with those very important self-regulation skills for our older tamariki in the Pepi room and has a calming effect on our younger infants.

We just love hearing our tamariki singing the songs they have learned throughout the day. When we hear them sing we can't help but just smile and beam with pride!
