Here at BestStart Kamo Central, we are currently focusing on becoming more sustainable. As part of this new initiative, we celebrated Sea Week for the first time this month. We were lucky enough to have one of our awesome whānau members, Tinto, come into the centre and share with us a model of a huge Marlin that he had caught.

The tamariki were so amazed to see it. We talked about its length and even got out the tape measure to show the tamariki just how long it was. This was a great way for the tamariki to learn more about maths concepts. We extended this learning by encouraging the tamariki to line up alongside the tape measure to see just how many of them we could fit.

Tinto also shared with us a presentation on his laptop that showed the tamariki what strategies they used to catch the giant Marlin, how the boat had to move and be positioned, what equipment and bait they used, and how long it took to catch. This sparked a lot of interest as it was shown in a cool cartoon format, so it was easier for the tamariki to see and understand. This allowed more conversations about why it's important to take care of the ocean and not leave any rubbish on the beach. We also discussed how you only catch the big fish and let the little ones go so they can grow bigger.
