At Montessori Otumoetai we value healthy eating and love getting tamariki involved in preparing food as a connected community. We noticed that some of our vegetables looked ready so the children harvested some beetroot, spinach and carrot for a hearty vegetable soup. Each step of this garden to table process involved active thinking, communicating, collaborating, processing and problem solving to mention a few. We added some beans and lentils to thicken up the soup and as it cooked we could smell the aroma of the soup in the afternoon.

Children were able to enjoy the result of their mahi tahi by eating the soup with wholewheat bread toast for afternoon tea. This collaborative effort also created sparks of interest, curiosity and engaged the senses with hands on experience. We have also been baking at Montessori Otumoetai, discovering gluten and dairy free coconut biscuits, which came out perfectly. Children here really love to work together to contribute to making shared kai. This has inspired a deep sense of manaakitanga and whanaungatanga, which we value in brining us together and enriching relationships, which in turn lead to meaningful learning for each individual here. We will be exploring different recipes offered by families which also promote healthy eating, further modeling the healthy heart lifestyle.
