The Magic of Music
In our Researchers room we have been learning all about music and movement and over the planning cycle we were lucky enough to have many of our talented parents and community members come in and share their beautiful instruments with us. Our tamariki loved being able to actively explore by playing the instruments themselves and we have it on good authority that these visits have prompted some instrument purchasing in the households of our tamariki.
We are so lucky to have such a supportive community surrounding our centre, all pitching in where they can to assist in growing kind, curious, confident tamariki. Benefits of Music and movement in ECE: Children naturally love music! Whether it’s soft and soothing or a lively tune, children feel it both physically and emotionally. Music enhances many skills that support further learning, including concentration, confidence, and cognitive and memory skills. It strengthens neural pathways for physical coordination, speaking and listening, and emotional wellbeing. As children grow in their appreciation of the beauty of music and dance, they acquire a gift that will bring them great pleasure.
Music brings another dimension of beauty into our lives. Music and movement benefit a child’s development in many ways. Here are skills that music and movement can help develop: Participating in a group Social skills Express emotions Enhance self‐concept by sharing music and dance of each other’s culture Refine listening skills‐noticing changes in tempo or pitch Awareness of movement and body positions Creativity and imagination Learn new words and concepts Explore cause and effect Develop large motor skills Improve balance, coordination and rhythm through dance and movement activities Improve small motor skills‐learning finger plays and playing musical instruments
