In May Otumoetai Montessori tamariki went on an excursion to visit a construction site in Maungatapu by a child's whānau who works at Higgins. This was such as special experience which gave children an opportunity to see how a seawall is built to keep the land from sliding into the ocean.

The children loved being welcomed so beautifully and watched Higgins staff build a wall made of concrete blocks. Tamariki each wore safety gear which included a high viz vest and a hard hat, building on their understanding around safety in this line of work. Higgins staff discussed the risks of working on a building site and tamariki were invited to share their ideas of what might be safe and unsafe while working with large machinery, heavy equipment and tools in the building trade.

Each child was invited to sit in one of the machines. This provided an insight into how many levers and gears are used to manipulate the machinery to move heavy objects. Toward the end of the excursion Higgins gave each child a certificate of completion to take home. They showed amazing manaakitanga also by providing a space for some morning tea, with a view of Mauao. A big thank you to Higgins construction for having great community spirit and making us feel so welcome.
