Volcanoe making fun!
Making a volcano is an easy and fun project to do. Most of the materials on the list are inexpensive and easily available. You might even find them in your pantry.
To extend our developing literacy skills here at BestStart Taradale, we have developed a step-by-step volcano eruption instruction sheet using both written words and pictures. We love creating volcanos!
This is always such a cool way to weave early literacy learning through our already well-established interests. Learning to follow the instruction sheet also supports the children in developing the understanding that print is read from left to right, and top to bottom.
As educators, we recognize that early literacy is made up of several different parts, including developing an awareness of print (recognizing pictures and some symbols, signs, or words), comprehending oral language, such as meaning from pictures and stories, and using literacy in everyday activities. In this hands-on experience, children learn about how ingredients are combined to create chemical reactions, and are introduced to the features of volcanic rocks - just like volcanic eruptions!
