BestStart Waihopai Kindy celebrated Waitangi Day in style with a centre wide hangi. Many whanau and parents helped to prep the veges, dig the pit and start the fire. It was a very early start for the kaiako (teachers) but well worth it to see the faces of the tamariki (children) when they arrived at 8am to the smell of hangi. The tamariki really enjoyed watching the hangi burn in great anticipation and during this time we took the opportunity to discuss Waitangi Day, talk about how hangi is prepared and cook and also cheer on our fantastic helpers. Once the hangi was ready it was brought in to a great round of applause. We had over 70 whanau members attend and share in the kai and there was such an awesome atmosphere. We are very pleased to say we think we have started a new tradition here at BestStart Waihopai Kindy and can not wait for next years celebration.
