Over the past few months many of our children, across the centre, have enjoyed baking and cooking! They have been very busy making corn fritters, pikelets, muffins, cakes and biscuits to take home and share with their whānau. We have been using many different appliances for our baking and cooking, including the electric fry pans and ovens. We have been discussing the importance of having an adult with us to ensure we are kept safe because these things can get very hot.

During our pancake making, ngā tamariki enjoyed listening to the oil sizzle in the pan! Baking and cooking experiences give tamariki the opportunity to explore mathematics and science concepts. We enjoyed discussing and explaining the amounts of different ingredients that we were having to add and watching as the consistency and amount of mixture continued to change with the consistency. As our different foods cooked or baked, the yummy smells filled the centre and as our families entered, they were eager to find out what had been going on.

“What’s that yummy smell?” We heard the children sniffing away and guessing what it could be, creating lots of giggles too! Ngā tamariki are very proud of their baking skills and are all looking forward to being able to take their treats home and share them with their whānau.
